A Funny Word: Balance

How do you balance work and home life?

Work for me is a series of unpredictable questions wrapped in scripted an answers, where preparation is key.

Home is my beautiful chaos, where loud children, good food, and missing socks are the only constants.

In both worlds, however, the more I can document my discoveries and ready me for the next thing, the better I’ll be. If I can script the slides for my presentation or bake three weeks worth of muffins in a day, both are equally valuable in terms of the all important “balance”.

I also suppose in both places I create rhythm and space. At work, email is slotted for certain times of day; projects are blocked in advance on my calendar. At home, laundry is done on Friday; shopping is Saturday morning. Those routines allow me to have less decisions throughout the day, and I’m able to “balance” productivity with tasks & fun.

Balance is a myth, I believe. There’s no right, no wrong, no perfect answer to doing it all well. However, with equal amounts of preparation in each place, I find I can be more easily persuaded to feel a sense of calm everyday.
